Not the obvious ones — not the “your brake pads are crying for help” squeal, not the “your bottom bracket is older than your running vest” creak, not even the “your derailleur is auditioning for a metal band” grind.

No. You, Max, have unlocked the advanced level: A noise that isn’t pedaling, isn’t braking, isn’t anything identifiable, and yet somehow manages to haunt every ride like a tiny poltergeist living somewhere in your frame.

The Scene

You roll out onto the trail, feeling good, maybe even optimistic. The bike feels fine. The legs feel fine. The trail looks fine.

Then — SQEEEEEK.

Not loud. Not rhythmic. You shake the saddle. You spin the wheels. You check the pedals. You check the brakes. You check your sanity.

Nothing.

The bike remains silent, smug, and uncooperative.

The Investigation

This is the part where every mountain biker becomes a detective with the emotional stability of a caffeinated squirrel.

You try to isolate the sound:

It’s not the drivetrain — pedaling doesn’t change it.

It’s not the brakes — braking doesn’t trigger it.

It’s not the suspension — bouncing the bike doesn’t reproduce it.

It’s not the wheels — spinning them is quiet.

It’s not the seatpost — already greased, already cursed at.

At this point, you’re left with two possibilities:

The noise is coming from a parallel dimension.

The bike is messing with you on purpose.

Honestly, both feel equally plausible.

The Acceptance Phase

Eventually, you reach the stage every rider knows: The moment you stop trying to fix it and start hoping someone else will.

Luckily, you’ve already done the smartest thing possible — booked a full service appointment in autumn.

Because if anyone can find the source of a phantom squeak, it’s a mechanic who has:

heard every noise a bike can make,

fixed every noise a bike shouldn’t make,

and developed the patience of a monk through years of listening to customers say, “It only happens sometimes, but never when I bring it here.”

The Ride Until Then

So you keep riding. And with it: The Great Bike Exorcism.

Final Thoughts

Mystery noises are part of the MTB experience — like mud in places you didn’t know existed, or Strava segments that make you question your life choices.

But they also remind you of something important:

You don’t have to solve every problem alone. Sometimes you just ride, enjoy the trails, and let the professionals deal with the squeaky demons later.

There’s a special kind of madness that only a mystery bike noise can trigger.
